Peugeot's 1007 mini-MPV became only the second supermini, after Renault's Modus, to be awarded the full five-star rating in the latest round of Euro NCAP testing.

The little Pug was one of 13 cars tested in the most recent round, of which seven models achieved the full-five star rating.

The Lexus GS, BMW 3-Series, Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Opel Zafira, Renault Clio and Volkswagen Passat all completed the tests with a five-star rating. Citroën's C1, the Smart ForFour, Fiat Stilo and Honda's new FR-V MPV earned four stars, while the Dacia Logan budget car was the only model to earn three points.

The A-Class, Zafira, 3 Series and GS scored the highest points for child safety, though none of the models tested scored the full five points in this area.

Euro NCAP chairman Claes Tingvall said, "It is gratifying to see that more than half of the cars tested in this phase achieved the top five-star rating for adult occupant protection and that three of the cars achieved the "Best in Class" accolade, giving car buyers a wider range of safe cars than ever before to choose from."

The "Best in Class" cars, as mentioned by Tingvall, were the Mercedes-Benz A-Class (small family car), the BMW 3 Series (large family car) and the Peugeot 1007 (supermini).

The Peugeot 1007's comprehensive list of safety equipment includes eight airbags, pre-tensioners and load limiters for the front airbags, Isofix child seat mounting points, seatbelt reminders for all occupants and ABS with brake assist.
