The chief executive of Avis Southern Africa, the car rental and fleet management company, Grenville Wilson, has resigned.

Wilson tendered his resignation after the close of talks last week with Barloworld, who had last year taken over the company. The resignation came as a surprise to the industry, though Wilson declined to say anything about his resignation or his plans for the future.

In a statement, Barloworld chief executive Martin Laubscher said Wilson had produced a competent management team at Avis.

"Although his leaving will undoubtedly be a loss to the organisation, I am confident that the management team and all the Avis brand ambassadors will continue to ensure that Avis exceeds customer expectations and that the brand continues to grow," Laubscher said.

Keith Rankin, managing director of Avis Rent-A-Car Southern Africa, Pat O'Brien, director of Zeda and Car Mall, Laurence Savage, managing director of Avis Fleet Services, and Bob Smith, the managing director of motor franchises, would from now on report directly to Laubscher.
