It’s been well over a year since BMW and Toyota first announced they were planning to build a joint sports car platform. Finally there is some news as to what this might be.

It was no secret that Toyota Chairman Takeshi Uchiyamada was keen on a much-anticipated Supra successor but, at the time, BMW would only go so far as to admitting they were working on “four, five or six" different proposals. It could have been anything from a mid-engined supercar or a traditional front-engined sports car they said.

According to the latest reports there finally has been some agreement – though it is still vague.

"We have agreed on a joint architecture for a sports car,” BMW development boss Dr. Herbert Diess told Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. “What is important is that there will be two different vehicles that are authentic to the two brands."

No great revelation but at least we know it won’t be another Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ situation where the only thing that really separates the two models is the badge. At the top of this list, rumours place a a mainstream plug-in hybrid sports coupe that's based on a brand new platform and drivetrain.
