Volkswagen's Golf Plus was recently unveiled at the Bologna Motor Show. Said to be a replacement for the Golf station wagon, it offers more flexibility than traditional hatchbacks.

In June this year CARtoday.com reported that the MPV-styled Golf Plus and the Touran would together perform the role filled by the Golf 4 Estate in the previous line-up. Where the Touran appeals directly to families concerned with practicality and space, the Plus is likely to appeal to smaller families requiring more from their regular hatchbacks.

Heavily based on the new Golf released earlier this year, the Golf Plus offers more interior space by virtue of its height, which has been increased by 95 mm. It has greater flexibility, with a rear seat that can be shifted lengthways, or lowered – via a new folding system – into the floor.

The double-height boot floor allows a maximum storage capacity of 505 litres.

Golf Plus’s styling is closely linked to that of the hatchback. Fot the first time in a Golf, LED technology is used in the rear lights, and active headlights will also be offered. Specification levels are expected to be similar to the those of the normal hatch Standard items will include ABS, ESP, front, side and curtain airbags, and a long list of added convenience features.

But there will probably be no GTI performance model, and certainly no three-door version in the range when it is released internationally next year.

The Golf Plus will be powered by either a 1,6- or two-litre FSI petrol powerplant and a TDI diesel (probably the 1,9-litre or two-litre) should also be available. To begin with, the vehicle will not be offered in South Africa.
