Citroën's cheeky C2 line-up is expanded with the addition of a VTS model with supercar aspirations - the gutsy 1,6-litre VTS pushes out 93 kW!

Fast becoming one of the most popular tiny cars available, the 1,4-litre C2 VTR has been Citroën SA's sole offering in the super-mini stakes, but those looking for more performance should now be appeased.

The C2 VTS is fitted with a 93 kW 16-valve 1,6-litre engine, mated with a five-speed manual gearbox. Maximum power is developed at 6 500 r/min and peak torque of 143 N.m at 3 400 r/min.

Based on Citroën's 80 kW 1,6-litre, the VTS's powerplant comes with exciting performance boosting upgrades, including a special intake manifold, new injection and exhaust systems.

Compared with the VTR, the chassis has undergone some changes too. These include a wider and stiffer anti-roll bar and new front and rear springs that, along with the damping, have been firmed.

This funky yet stylish C2 comes with looks to match - fresh body styling includes a rear spoiler, special 16-inch alloy wheels and a chrome tail pipe. On the inside, new black seats, translucent door handles in grey, a leather steering wheel and aluminium pedals are some of the changes.

Again, safety takes precedence and the VTS is equipped with ABS, ESP that can be switched on or off depending on driving conditions, four airbags and fog lamps as standard. Ergonomics is good too - the steering wheel is height- and reach-adjustable, the driver's seat is height adjustable and the front seats can slide over a distance of 230 mm, providing ample space for even the lankiest of drivers.

The independent rear seats can be folded down for extra space at the rear and the split opening tailgate ensures easy access to the bootspace.

Standard comfort features include air conditioning system, electric windows electric side mirrors and a six-speaker CD player.

The car costs R144 995 and comes standard with a three-year/100 000 km warranty and a roadside assistance package. Services are required every 20 000 km.
