Although there are still six rounds still to go in the series, in which a total of 180 points still up for grabs, but Briggs is doing a Briggs has collected a total of 54 points in the last two rounds alone. And, given his 25-point haul in Round 1 at Kyalami, he will be a force to be reckoned with for the rest of the season.

Pepper and Scott Bricknell are his closest contenders. Not

far off, and in fact also standing a very good chance is newcomer Leeroy Poulter, who is blowing hot and cold this season.

Bricknell in particular has shown promise over the last 18 months, and now may be the time to make his move. He has scored three second places so far this season, but the Port Elizabeth youngster realises he has to do so consistently, and win some if he wants to challenge for top honours.

Curt Alchin is having an indifferent season by his standards, and he must be unhappy to be languishing in fifth position after a storming 2004 season in which he came onto his own against some stiff competition. Some of that competition has gone the way of Production Cars (champion Michael Stephen and team-mate Tschops Sipuka make their début in the Engen Audi A4 on the same day), many would expect Alchin to be up there with Briggs.

The season is admittedly far from over, but Kyalami provides a mouth-watering prospect for the closest mid-championship dogfights since last year. Round 5 will provide the scene for the "big move up" for all serious contenders.
