Fiat Auto SA (FASA) has been awarded a R200-million contract to supply 10 000 exhaust heat shields a month to the manufacturer's Italian plant.

The Cassino plant in Naples is where Fiat's new Croma is built and the contract (which commences with immediate effect) will last the duration of the mid-sized vehicle's life cycle.

A Rosslyn-based supplier, Rieter Feltex, has started production of the aluminium exhaust heat shields that insulate the cabin from heat emanating from the exhaust system.

The new deal is worth about R200 million and will boost FASA's annual export turnover by more than 12 per cent. Currently the manufacturer exports catalytic converters and is the sole supplier of stitched leather seat covers for the Alfa Romeo 147 and 156 ranges.

The local subsidiary has promised further announcements about additional export contracts within the next few weeks.
