Subaru has launched an Andreas Zapatinas-penned updated Impreza on the Japanese market. This will be the final incarnation of the current car, until a new model - reportedly to be called the B3 Impreza - becomes available in 2007.

As can be seen from these pictures, the new Impreza features new look front bumper and the new Subaru-family grille (first seen in production form on the B9 Tribeca SUV). The headlights enhance the car's (significantly) sportier front profile and rear light clusters also feature a rounded design, complementing the headlight style.

In addition, sweeping character lines run from the grille over the bonnet. Although details are sketchy, the interior was said to be tailored for a more-upmarket ambience.

Performance enthusiasts will be pleased to find out that the WRX STI now develops maximum engine torque of 422 N.m. The model also features an improved version of the driver's control center differential (DCCD), an electronically controlled All Wheel Drive (AWD) system that adds a torque-sensitive, mechanical limited-slip differential (LSD).

In addition, the WRX STI's exterior components were made more fully aerodynamic (read: the ironing board-like rear wing), "in recognition of its participation in high-speed rally events and motor sport activities". News on the South African specification Impreza 2006 (MY06) will be released towards the end of this year, a spokesman for the company said on Friday.
