After resigning on Monday, the former chairman and chief executive of Rolls-Royce, Karl-Heinz Kalbfell, is apparently on his way to Alfa Romeo.

Kalbfell will replace Daniele Bandiera, who has been at Alfa Romeo’s helm since February 2002. Although Kalbfell’s appointment could be announced as early as next week, reported, his non-compete clause with BMW could make him available only in 2005.

Kalbfell resigned at Rolls-Royce on Monday after working for parent company BMW for the past 28 years. He had only been at the head of the ultra-luxury brand for five months after his predecessor unexpectedly resigned.

In May, Tony Gott abruptly resigned from the position, citing personal reasons. Gott was appointed in 2002 to replace Kalbfell, but after his resignation in May this year, Kalbfell was reinstated.

But five months after his new appointment, a Rolls-Royce spokesman announced that Kalbfell was "leaving at his own request because he is taking up a new job outside the company".

BMW AG said its board member responsible for finance, Stefan Krause, would step in for Kalbfell until a successor was found.
