With the unveiling of its MG Concept CS at last year’s Shanghai Motor Show, the Chinese carmaker voiced its intention to take the fight to the likes of the Nissan’s Juke and Qashqai crossovers. Now images have emerged online of the concept-inspired car with which they plan to do just that.

Early reports suggest that the as-yet-unnamed crossover will be underpinned by the MG6 compact saloon’s chassis and will rival the short wheelbase Nissan Qashqai in terms of size – around 4,3 metres in length.

It will initially be offered with a choice of just two turbopetrol powerplants. The entry-level 1,5-litre, four-cylinder unit will develop 99 kW while the 2,0-litre could develop a healthy 147 kW. But don’t be surprised if cost-saving exercises see the 1,8-litre from the MG6, rated at 118 kW and 215 N.m, making an appearance.

There’s no word on whether this model will be offered with an all-wheel drivetrain, but given its likely boutique/urban audience it’s probably destined to be an FWD-only proposition.

If these initial pictures are to be believed, many of the design elements from the MG Concept CS have been carried over to the production car. These include deep sills and nose and tail venting, as well as a steeply raked coupe-like rear.

The release date has not been confirmed, but given the Qashqai’s strong presence in the crossover market, not to mention the imminent arrival of an all-new version, MG should try to get this model into showrooms during the course of 2014.
