American rap star Missy "Misdemeanor” Elliot decided to treat herself to a R4,4 million plum-coloured 2001 Lamborghini Diablo for Christmas, but did not even get a chance to drive it.

Elliot, who had hits this year with “Get ur freak on” and “One minute man” from her record-breaking album “So addictive” and asked a towing company to transport the sports car from California to her home in Virginia Beach, Virginia. But it did not get there.

According to the New York Times, temptation proved too much for the company’s dispatcher Joseph Thomas Johnson. He decided to take the car for a quick spin before it left for its new owner.

Johnson, it seemed, could not quite control the expensive car and knocked over a speed limit sign before slamming it into a tree. He abandoned the car and has now been charged with reckless driving and grand larceny. Repair cost is estimated to be about R2 million.

Wonder who will be buying Missy a new Diablo? Or maybe she’ll just hang on and get a new Lamborghini Murciélago, with its monster 6,2-litre V12 engine, four-wheel drive, active aerodynamics and special pop-up wings.
