Peugeot has released the first details of its new 108 compact hatchback. This is not just a new model, but the range will also be enlarged with the addition of a convertible-aping version called the Top!.

The Top! will not feature a conventional convertible roof but rather a huge cloth section which moves towards the rear to allow all passengers to be bathed in sunlight. The French manufacturer claims it is similar to the system used on the Citroën DS3 Cabrio.

At 3,47 meters long and 1,62 metres wide, it is still a very small car. Powering the hatch will still be a 1,0-litre three-cylinder engine. A new addition is that of a 1,2-litre engine, but the local line up and specification will only be revealed closer to its local launch date. The international line will be made up of the following cars:

- 1.0 e-VTi 68, 88 g/km CO2
- 1.0 VTi 68, 95 g/km CO2
- 1.0 VTi 68, 97 g/km CO2
- Puretech 1.2 VTi 82, 99 g/km CO2

All models feature a five-speed manual gearbox and Peugeot claims a weight (likely to be dry) of only 840 kg.

Judging by the CO2 emissions, we can safely assume that fuel consumption has stayed the same, although it is unclear whether the current engine’s 50 kW/93 N.m delivery will be surpassed.

A lot of emphasis has been placed on what Peugeot calls “personalisation themes” for the car. These different stylistic options will be called Dressy, Dual, Diamond, Barcode, Sport, Tattoo, Porcelaine and Aïkinite. A total of six trim levels will be offered.

Finally, safety features include ABS brakes with EBD, and ESP. No interior pictures have been released yet.

Expect full details of the Peugeot 108 at next month’s Geneva Motor Show. Watch below as Peugeot directors and designers discuss the car in detail.
