Surrounded by good-looking vehicles such as the ageing, though classy, Renault Clio and elegant Honda Jazz, the current Polo, with three body styles and a range of accomplished engines, has steadily been gaining popularity on the local market.

Good news is that the radically transformed Polo will arrive later this year, showing off a whole new front end and greatly restyled rear. The characteristic (and perhaps anachronistic) twin headlamps will be replaced by a more modern single frame design while retaining the circular effect of the current model.

The new snout stretches the Polo by just under 20 mm, though its width and height remain the same. The rear end's redesign is fun and sporty, with new lights echoing the front end's circular theme, and a cleverly designed rear window ending in a quirky V-shape.

Volkswagen AG has pointed out that models across the range will now come standard with ABS and brake assist, power windows at the front, air-conditioning and central locking. Depending on the specification level, added convenience and safety features include Park Distance Control, a tyre pressure monitor and "follow-me-home" lights. Front and side airbags are standard (curtain airbags optional), while ESP is offered on certain models - again dependent on the level of specification.

An exciting range of powerplants is planned too, including a quick 2,0-litre FSI and a wider selection of high-powered TDI engines.
