With eyes and ears open for the arrival of the Indian-built Toyota Etios budget-beater and possibility of the even smaller Aygo, pundits suggest a decline in the popularity of the Yaris... but with a replacement on the horizon, will the Yaris remain as strong as ever?

These are official images of the next generation Yaris (or Vitz as it’s known in Japan), reportedly 100 mm longer than the current car, 20 mm lower and 30 kg lighter. With an extra 50 mm in the wheelbase, rear passengers get an extra 35 mm legroom.

Although Toyota’s research shows a strong female contingent of the first two generations of the Yaris (the first one was never introduced locally), the next one will have a more macho appeal, thanks to dramatic restyling – with a sleeker profile and strong contours and pronounced bumpers. Inside, the Yaris gets more effective materials to combat noise and vibration.

The new model will feature two petrol motors: a 1,0-litre and a 1,3-litre. The larger engine will feature start-stop functionality, with some Japanese models likely to be mated with CVT transmission, whereas a five-speed manual will be standard fitment in Toyota’s other markets. A diesel and hybrid will follow soon thereafter.

The Yaris will probably reach South Africa toward the end of 2011, or early in 2012.
