The petrol price is expected to increase by three cents per litre on January 2 due to the deterioration of the rand compared with the dollar.

The Department of Minerals and Energy said an increase of two cents a litre was expected in the price of diesel. A litre of illuminating paraffin was likely to jump by four cents.

The price of petrol decreased by 21 cents about two weeks ago due to the drop in the price of oil. But this week Russia provided a boost by announcing that it would help the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries stabilise the price through cutting production.

The Department also announced that the sulphur content in diesel would drop from January 2.

The current 0,5 per cent sulphur content diesel would be replaced by 0,3 per cent and 0,05 percent diesel grades. Those two grades would cost respectively 2c and 6c a litre more.

This is good news, as sulphur increases the wear rate of most engine types and adds to emissions.

CARtoday.com reported last week that the European Union had agreed to ban sulphur in petrol as part of its efforts to reduce harmful pollutants from cars.

The union is requiring all member countries to introduce petrol and diesel with much lower sulphur content from January 1, 2005, preceding a total ban from January 1, 2009. The sulphur content in diesel in Europe is currently at 0,035 per cent.
