DaimlerChrysler's claim that Cyril Ramaphosa owns a Maybach 62 has left the businessman and former politician so incensed that he has taken steps to sue the manufacturer.

Ramaphosa has reportedly, through his lawyer, asked the company to apologise on several occasions, but it has refused to comply. He said he felt embarrassed to be associated with a car that was worth four million rand and demanded that the company correct the impression it had created of him.

DaimlerChrysler SA spokesperson Fanyana Shiburi recently told reporters that Ramaphosa was only one of four individuals in southern Africa who owned one of the exclusive vehicles.

Ramaphosa's lawyer said the claim by DaimlerChrysler was false as the businessman had never ordered nor intended to purchase a Maybach.

The Maybach 62, arguably the most expensive car available in South Africa, is equipped with a horde of conveniences including fully reclining seats, a 600W Dolby sound system at each seat, a refrigerated compartment and a cordless phone with two handsets.

The twin-turbo 5,5-litre V12 engine accelerates the car from zero to 100 km/h in just 5,2 seconds, allows it to sprint from 60 to 120 km/h in 6,2 seconds, and propels it to an electronically-limited top speed of 250 km/h.
