The Asset Forfeiture Unit on Wednesday seized the car of a woman repeatedly caught drunk driving… and more car seizures are planned.

Members of the Asset Forfeiture Unit (ASU) confronted Wilhemina Vermaak of Groblersdal, Mphumalanga at work. Her Volkswagen Jetta has been placed under curatorship after it was proven that she had driven it on several occasions while under the influence of alcohol.

The car was seized under the Prevention of Organised Crime Act, and the AFU argued that the car had been instrumental in various offences.

In one instance this year, after narrowly avoiding a cyclist and oncoming car and colliding with a fence, blood tests taken at the time of Vermaak’s apprehension showed her blood alcohol levels to be more than seven times over the legal limit.

Makhosini Nkosi, spokesman for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), said the car seizure was meant to serve as a deterrent to people planning to risk driving drunk over the festive season.

This week’s seizure follows the first incident in November, when the Cape High Court ordered that the Toyota Corolla of Benjamin Kleinbooi of Laingsburg be seized by the state.

NPA spokesman at the time Sipho Ngwema said the car’s attachment supported the transport department’s Arrive Alive campaign by “sending a strong message to drunken drivers.”

According to a report, traffic officials have compiled a list of more than 40 cases which will be evaluated before being handed to prosecutors for the lodging of forfeiture applications.
