The fifth-generation Volkswagen Jetta will make its first public appearance at the Los Angeles Motor Show in January.

The new model has a curvier profile than the current car, and carries over the more appealing, modern face of the new Golf Five, which itself was recently launched in South Africa.

However, VWSA had no plans to launch the range in South Africa in 2005.

The launch of the new car is nevertheless eagerly awaited in the United States. The Jetta accounts for 40 per cent of the Wolfsburg-based manufacturer’s sales volume in the States – 2,2 million have found owners in its 25-year life and, according to it is the best-selling European car in the US. The range will be built at VW's Puebla plant in Mexico, where the original Beetle went out of production just last year.

In the US, the new Jetta will be offered with a 112 kW 2,5-litre V5 and probably 110 kW 2,0-litre FSI and 103 kW Tdi turbodiesel engines. A six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission and a DSG gearbox, as found in the Audi A3, will be optional.

The new range is bigger and offers more space than its predecessor. Jetta also shares the new Golf's multi-link suspension and will be fitted with electric power steering, stability control, and ABS, among other systems – reports said.
