Wolfgang Stadler, technical director of BMW South Africa’s plant in Rosslyn, will succeed Ian Robertson as managing director of the Pretoria-based company next week.
CARtoday.com reported last year that Robertson, then president of Naamsa, would leave South Africa to assume the post of chairman and chief executive of BMW-owned Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, England.
Trained as a mechanical engineer, Stadler has been with the BMW Group for nearly 22 years, thirteen of which were spent at the marque’s Dingolfing Plant. A spokesman said Stadler gained experience as a team leader on the production of numerous BMW models at Dingolfing.
In 1966 he moved to Munich, where he worked as a director of production strategies and more recently as director of experimental vehicles.
Although he gained most of his experience in his native Germany, Stadler is no stranger to South Africa. BMW AG says his experience as technical director of BMW SA’s plant for the past two years “will provide an invaluable base for his future responsibilities as managing director.
