Purchasing a car can be a costly exercise so, if you have found yourself baulking at the prices of entry-level cars, Honda SA has a two-wheeled solution, in the shape of the Cub scooter, and it cost less than R14 000.

The companies have devised a package to make the Honda Cub Wave more affordable to “low-income workers”. The price of R 13 695 includes training, a helmet, gloves, rain suit and a refundable learner’s licence booking fee. Honda’s network of motorcycle dealers will provide service and warranty support.

According to Honda SA, the monthly cost of the motorcycle (about R 600 over 36 months) is less than what the average consumer spends each month travelling to work by public transport.

"By sourcing the Honda Wave scooter at the best possible price from Honda's Xindazhou factory in China, we hope to be able to make a significant contribution to the future mobility of South Africans," said Hiroaki Shibata, the new managing director for Honda South Africa.

Andrew Khuzwayo, chairman of Sondombili Solutions, said: "Independent transport will result in improved punctuality and reliability of staff. For this reason we will focus much of our marketing effort on the large corporates.”

It will be targeting companies whose employees work unusual hours and provide an alternative to these businesses who often have to arrange their workers’ transport themselves.

Khuzwayo said this would also lead to empowerment for black commuters, who would not be solely reliant on taxis, trains and buses, and would be able to travel after dark when public transport schedules were irregular.

”The market potential for this concept is huge, and is bound to structurally change the public transport system in this country – in much the same way that the minibus taxi did in the late '70s," concluded Khuzwayo.

The Cub scooter is produced in 15 countries and more than

three million are sold each year.
