BMW's Motorrad division has launched a new motorcycle series -the BMW BoxerCup Africa Race Series - and eight races are planned for 2005.

The series is open to any BMW R1100 S owners, and according to general manager of BMW Motorrad South Africa Lachlan Harris, offers "one of the few opportunities motorcycle owners will ever have to test their machines and skills in a true, competitive environment."

"The regulations for the race series have been adapted from the popular BoxerCup Series in Europe and America, ensuring that only production motorcycles will take to the grid, and that the cost of competing will be within the reach of all BMW R1100 S owners."

Of the eight races, five will be held at the Zwartkops Raceway, with another three planned for Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and East London.

The idea for this race series developed in 2003 when BMW motorcycle dealer and motorsport enthusiast, Bruce Meyers, and a small group of motorcycle owners, established the S-Cup Series.

This series drew quite a following in its first year, and BMW Motorrad was subsequently approached to present an S-Cup race at the recent two-seater F1 demonstration at Kyalami.

"Having become involved with the S-Cup, BMW Motorrad realised the importance of the series and its riders, and we knew that we needed to develop this concept further," said Harris. "Thus, in 2005, the S-Cup will be transformed into the BMW BoxerCup Africa Race Series under the guidance of BMW Motorrad."

Entry forms and race regulations are available at www.bmwmotorrad.co.za. Rob Holder of BMW Motorrad can be contacted for more details at (011) 690 2600 or [email protected].
