Much like Mercedes-Benz’s E 200 K provided a step up to the E-Class range last year, the 523i will signal a more affordable way to own a 5 Series, when it arrives later this year.

On Tuesday, BMW SA Media Liaison Clynton Yon told CARtoday.com that the model currently being advertised would only be available from June. However, BMW dealerships are currently accepting orders for the range’s latest addition.

The 523i will be powered by a version of BMW’s new-generation six-cylinder petrol engine, composed of a new magnesium-aluminium composite and featuring Valvetronic.

Using lightweight materials, the 2 497 cm3 engine produces a useful 130 kW at 5 800 r/min and 230 N.m of torque at 3 500 r/min, according to . This six-cylinder saloon sprints to 100 km/h in 8,5 seconds and has a top speed of 235 km/h. Highlighting the flexibility of the engine, 95 per cent of its maximum torque is available between 2 000 and 5 000 r/min.

A six-speed manual transmission is standard, while an automatic transmission with Steptronic is available as an option. At its launch, the 523i will undoubtedly come quite well equipped, with DSC+ offered as standard. In addition to the standard DSC, this system incorporates Rain Brake Support, Soft Brake and Hill Start Assist as some of its functions.

Servotronic variable speed power steering could also be added to the standard equipment list, though prices and full specification will be available near the nearer the launch date.
