Pirelli Tyres South Africa has launched an aftermarket tyre pressure monitoring system, called the X-Pressure, said to be maintenance-free and compatible with most vehicles.

Electronic sensors are fitted inside each tyre, monitoring pressure and temperature data that is then transmitted to a liquid crystal display on the dashboard. Pressing a button on the receiver unit allows the driver to check the tyre pressure and temperature status, updated every seven seconds.

The X-Pressure system is programmed to inform the driver of changes in pressure in three stages. An initial warning is sounded when the tyre pressure changes by 10 per cent from the correct level. Another warning is sounded once the pressure drops to below 1,54 bar and finally, a danger warning is sounded once the internal tyre temperature exceeds 80°C.

The system is available at all Pirelli Performance Centres countrywide and once fitted, requires no maintenance. The sensor batteries last for more than five years when used for around 50 000 km per year under normal driving conditions. It is compatible with a range of vehicles including SUVs, light commercial vehicles and sports cars.

Allowing the driver to constantly ensure tyres are maintained at the optimum tyre pressure, the system ensures greater driving safety, increased fuel economy and prolonged tyre life.

According to Wayne Arrow, production manager at Pirelli, the system's suggested retail price is R 1 235 rand. This excludes the cost of installation, which is determined at the dealer's discretion.
