Which were the fastest-accelerating vehicles of the 75 we tested in 2019? Below we look at the cars that stunned us when it came to accelerating off the line. Note this list is based on test figures we gathered during our standard, rigorous road-test procedure (rather than simply times claimed by the respective manufacturer)...

5. Mercedes-AMG C63 S Speedshift-MCT 9G  4,22 seconds

Now the C63 has inherited the nine-speed automatic transmission, it feels a bit more sophisticated. Other than that, it’s the same old German muscle car. The twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 helped it achieve a 0-100 km/h time of 4,22 seconds on our test strip.

4. Audi RS4 Avant Quattro Tiptronic – 3,98 seconds

The sportswagon is a niche market here in South Africa but considering this RS4 can do 0-100 km/h in under 4,0 seconds, there's a strong case to be made for it. This figure is thanks to a twin-turbo 2,9-litre V6, an eight-speed automatic transmission and, of course, a stellar all-wheel-drive system.

3. Audi RS5 Sportback Quattro Tiptronic – 3,96 seconds

Sharing its oily bits with the RS4 above but boasting a slightly lower mass, the RS5 was able to best its wagon sibling to 100 km/h by just 0,02 seconds.

2. BMW M850i xDrive Coupe Steptronic – 3,93 seconds

It’s the biggest car on this list but it seems all that weight doesn’t work against it when taking off from a standstill. With a twin-turbo 4,4-litre V8 pushing out 390 kW, this close-to-two-tonne coupé was able to launch itself to 100 km/h in 3,93 seconds.

1. Porsche 911 Carrera S PDK – 3,41 seconds

Yes, the new Porsche 911 Carrera S was the fastest-accelerating car we tested all year, achieving a stellar time of 3,41 seconds on our test strip. Sourcing power from a twin-turbo 3,0-litre flat-six engine, 331 kW is delivered to the rear wheels through a snappy eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.
