5. Mercedes-AMG C63 S Speedshift-MCT 9G – 4,22 seconds

Now the C63 has inherited the nine-speed automatic transmission, it feels a bit more sophisticated. Other than that, it’s the same old German muscle car. The twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 helped it achieve a 0-100 km/h time of 4,22 seconds on our test strip.

4. Audi RS4 Avant Quattro Tiptronic – 3,98 seconds

The sportswagon is a niche market here in South Africa but considering this RS4 can do 0-100 km/h in under 4,0 seconds, there's a strong case to be made for it. This figure is thanks to a twin-turbo 2,9-litre V6, an eight-speed automatic transmission and, of course, a stellar all-wheel-drive system.

3. Audi RS5 Sportback Quattro Tiptronic – 3,96 seconds

Sharing its oily bits with the RS4 above but boasting a slightly lower mass, the RS5 was able to best its wagon sibling to 100 km/h by just 0,02 seconds.

2. BMW M850i xDrive Coupe Steptronic – 3,93 seconds

It’s the biggest car on this list but it seems all that weight doesn’t work against it when taking off from a standstill. With a twin-turbo 4,4-litre V8 pushing out 390 kW, this close-to-two-tonne coupé was able to launch itself to 100 km/h in 3,93 seconds.

1. Porsche 911 Carrera S PDK – 3,41 seconds

Yes, the new Porsche 911 Carrera S was the fastest-accelerating car we tested all year, achieving a stellar time of 3,41 seconds on our test strip. Sourcing power from a twin-turbo 3,0-litre flat-six engine, 331 kW is delivered to the rear wheels through a snappy eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.
