In 2019, we tested cars of all shapes and sizes, with each and every one being carefully driven onto our scales. Below you'll find a list of the heaviest vehicles we featured over the year, each of which is either a bakkie or an SUV.

5. BMW X5 M50d xDrive Steptronic – 2 337 kg

Given its mass figure, it’s no wonder this SUV makes use of four turbochargers. The result? Stupendous response anywhere in the rev range. In fact, we can’t recall another turbodiesel reacting this quickly.

4. Ford Ranger Raptor DC 2,0 BiT4x4 10AT – 2 420 kg

There’s a lot of extra kit that goes into this dune-bashing bakkie which is probably why the flagship Ranger is the heaviest of the bunch. And it's the sophisticated suspension system that immediately impresses with a compliant ride both on- and off-road.

3. Ford Everest 2,0 BiT 4x4 Limited 10AT – 2 467 kg

Since it's closely related to the Ranger (with an added rear compartment) it’s no surprise the updated Everest makes it onto the list. Should the Blue Oval brand put its ladder-frame SUV on a diet to shed some of those nearly 2 500 kg?

2. BMW X7 M50d xDrive Steptronic – 2 588 kg

Predictably, the biggest offering in BMW's SUV stable is also the heaviest. In the metal, the hefty SUV assumes an imposing stance, particularly when viewed from the front. And that’s in part thanks to the Spartanburg-built newcomer’s colossal kidney grille.

1. Mercedes-AMG G63 4MATIC+ Speedshift-TCT 9G – 2 599 kg

In Mercedes-AMG G63 guise, the G-Class tipped our scales as the heaviest test car of 2019. The G-Class is 53 mm longer than before, 121 mm wider and its underbelly is now 6 mm further above the ground. Despite this bloat in dimensions, the average weight saving model to model is a claimed 170 kg.
