At CAR, we take each vehicle we test on a standard fuel route of 100 km (comprising urban and motorway sections) to gather data on its "real-world" fuel consumption. Listed below are the least fuel-efficient cars (measured in litres per 100 km) we tested in 2019...

5. Mercedes-AMG C63 S Speedshift-MCT 9G: 11,50 L/100 km (claimed: 9,90 L/100 km)

The first of only two sedans on this list, the S-badged C63’s 4,0-litre twin-turbo V8 sends 375 kW and 700 N.m of torque to the rear axle via a nine-speed self-shifter.

4. Audi Q8 55 TFSI Quattro Tiptronic: 11,60 L/100 km (claimed: 9,10 L/100 km)

In 2019, Audi entered the coupé-styled SUV niche in SA with the striking Q8. The first variant to touch down on local soil was this, the 55 TFSI, which employs a 3,0-litre turbocharged V6 petrol, good for 250 kW and 500 N.m, the latter from a low 1 370 r/min.

3. Jaguar XJR 575: 11,70 L/100 km (claimed: 11,10 L/100 km)

The second sedan on this list, the Jaguar XJR 575 employs the British firm's familiar 5,0-litre supercharged V8 petrol mill. In the XJR, peak outputs of 423 kW and 700 N.m are sent to the rear axle.

2. Jaguar F-Pace AWD SVR: 12,10 L/100 km (claimed: 11,40 L/100 km)

Jaguar Land Rover's snarling V8 makes another appearance on the list. This time it’s fitted to the F-Pace SVR performance SUV. Here, the supercharged 5,0-litre churns out 405 kW and 680 N.m.

1. Mercedes-AMG G63 4MATIC+ Speedshift-TCT 9G: 15,40 L/100 km (claimed: 13,10 L/100 km)

Arguably one of the most desirable SUVs out there (but also the thirstiest on our mixed-use fuel route) is the Mercedes-AMG G63. Boasting Affalterbach’s 4,0-litre twinturbo-petrol V8, which is good for 430 kW and 850 N.m, the G63 also managed an astonishing 0-100 km/h time on our test strip...
