Audi’s head of design says it would “make no sense” for automakers to offer alloy wheels any larger than those available today.

Speaking to Motor Authority, Marc Lichte said wheels measuring more than 23 inches in diameter – such as those optionally offered on the new RS Q8 – would soon be unnecessary since vehicle footprints were unlikely to grow.

"Package wise, I would say this is definitely close to the limit," Lichte told the publication, referring to the RS Q8’s largest wheels.

The Ingolstadt-based firm’s design chief explained that vehicles – and thus their wheels – would finally stop growing generation to generation as the industry moved towards electric cars (which typically allow for improved packaging and larger, more spacious interiors).

Lichte furthermore pointed out that RS-badged variants generally featured wheels at least one inch larger than those of the cooking versions.
