The new BMW Concept iX3 has been revealed at the Beijing Motor Show, offering “a look ahead” to the expansion of the X3 range with a fully electric vehicle.

The Munich-based brand says its new Concept iX3 employs a version of the automaker’s fifth-generation electric motor, generating “more than 200 kW”. The model-specific high-voltage battery has a net capacity of more than 70 kWh, which BMW says is enough to give the electric SUV a range of over 400 km on the new, stricter WLTP cycle.

The concept’s energy storage system has a newly developed charging control unit that BMW says allows the vehicle to be hooked up to fast-charging stations generating up to 150 kW. The high-voltage battery can thus be charged in just 30 minutes at such a station.

Interestingly, BMW has opted to give the electric version of the X3 various unique design elements, most notably a closed double kidney grille – reducing air resistance and providing aerodynamic benefits – featuring the blue accents already seen on models such as the BMW i3.

You’ll likely also notice the blue accents along the side-skirts, and the rear diffuser element finished in the same colour. The concept car is furthermore fitted with light-alloy wheels in an aerodynamically optimised design.
