The head of BMW Group South Africa says the new 4 Series coupé has already been “very well received” locally ahead of its arrival later in 2020.

Speaking during a Facebook Live broadcast, Tim Abbott, CEO of BMW Group South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa, said the styling of the new coupé represented a “very bold statement from BMW”.

“A very, very aggressive-looking vehicle. A lot of comment but I promise you – the first three vehicles turned up yesterday here in South Africa for homologation – when you see it in the flesh, I mean this is going to stand out on the road.

“It is absolutely stunning and it’ll be hitting the road later this year as well,” he said.

Abbott acknowledged the Munich-based firm had received some criticism around the new model’s styling. The grille is so big “a lot of my South African friends said ‘look, can we lay it flat then we can make a braai out of it?’,” he quipped.

Still, Abbott maintained the second-generation 4 Series was already “very well received in terms of South Africa”.

“It’s a car that we have high hopes for,” he added.

Revealed in June 2020, the fresh-faced coupé will be built at Dingolfing and is scheduled to launch in South Africa in the final quarter of 2020. The local range will comprise the 420i, 420d and M440i xDrive, with the yet-to-be-revealed M4 coming at a later date.
