BMW Group South Africa plans to donate 20 examples of its Rosslyn-built X3 – worth more than R15-million in total – to selected NGOs and educational establishments.

The first organisation to receive its X3 (in xDrive20d guise) is The Rhino Orphanage, a Limpopo-based charity dedicated to saving orphaned baby rhinoceroses.

BMW SA says that universities and technical colleges that have been selected to receive SUVs will be announced in due course.

Tim Abbott, CEO of BMW Group South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa, added that while the local arm of the Munich-based automaker had started production of the X3, it was “building more than just a car in South Africa”.

“We’re honoured to be able to give back, and donating 20 cars to the right kind of organisation is the continuation of our long-standing commitment to charitable causes,” Abbott said.

He added that the NGOs the company had selected were “organisations as dedicated to South Africa as we have been for the past 45 years”.

In April 2018, BMW's Plant Rosslyn near Pretoria completed the switchover from building the 3 Series sedan to the new-generation X3, before exports kicked off in May 2018.
