As part of the German brand's centenary celebrations, BMW South Africa has refurbished two of its most significant classic cars: the BMW M1 and the SA-only BMW 333i.

The local arm of the German automaker purchased the M1 from a customer back in the mid-1980s, using the vehicle as part of its classic collection.

Back then, the M1 was fully restored. But BMW SA says "mechanical complications" later occurred, rendering the car undriveable (and parts scarce). Now the company's press vehicle technicians and two apprentices from the BMW Training Centre at Plant Rosslyn have restored it to its former glory.

The BMW (E30) 333i, which was manufactured in 1985 at BMW Plant Rosslyn, has also been given a new lease on life.

Also known as the "Gusheshe", the 333i was based on the second-generation 3 Series and specially developed for the South African market. It was created in collaboration with BMW, BMW Motorsport GmbH and Alpina and featured a 3,2-litre straight-six worth 146 kW.

A five-speed sports transmission, sports suspension and a specific cockpit design were also included. By 1987, approximately 200 units had been produced.

The SA arm of the brand says it plans to restore a BMW (E30) 325iS in 2017.
