Ford has previewed its Sync 4 next-generation infotainment system, which it says is “faster, easier and simpler than ever to use”.

Featuring cloud-based connectivity, the Blue Oval brand says Sync 4 will deliver “comprehensive search results and more functionality for customers”, including wireless compatibility with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and AppLink applications.

Set to become available on “select” Ford vehicles from 2020 (in the United States, at least), the new system will feature different looks and capabilities depending on the model and screen size.

For instance, a new 12-inch (portrait) screen will be split into larger and smaller windows, allowing the driver to, for example, keep their navigation route on screen while changing songs. There will also be a massive (vertically arranged) 15,5-inch screen, which shows recently used or popular features underneath the main portion of the display.

While Ford says Sync 4 will “rely heavily on the cloud”, it will still retain on-board processing power to “minimise performance issues in dead zones”.

Sync 4 will furthermore feature machine learning capability (in order to automatically learn a user’s preferences) as well as a digital owner’s manual.
