Chinese automaker Geely has released the first official images of its upcoming coupé-style SUV, which will run on Volvo’s Compact Modular Architecture (CMA).

Codenamed “FY11”, the swoopy new crossover will be the first Geely product to be based on the CMA underpinnings it jointly developed with its Swedish subsidiary, Volvo.

Geely says the use of this platform in the FY11’s development gave “room for true flexibility and scalability, allowing the engineers and design team to work together to create a vehicle that has true sporting credentials”.

Under the bonnet, you’ll find a turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that offers 175 kW and 350 N.m (seemingly the same unit used by Volvo’s XC40 T5, albeit with ten fewer kilowatts). The firm says both front-wheel and all-wheel-drive models will be offered.

The FY11’s grille includes a horizontal chrome strip that stretches across its width and effectively connects the slim headlamps. Of course, the FY11’s so-called “fastback” styling – no doubt drawing inspiration from the likes of the BMW X4 and Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé – that sets it apart from Geely’s other crossovers (and indeed similarly sized products from Volvo).

Geely says the vehicle’s front and rear suspension systems have been lowered for “better handling and aesthetic appeal”.

The automaker adds that further details regarding the interior of the FY11 will be announced in the “near future”.
