Have a few million burning a hole in your pocket (and crave a super-posh SUV)? No, us neither. But that hasn't stopped us from digging through the official price lists and identifying the five most expensive SUVs currently on South Africa's new vehicle market. Predictably, they all feature all-wheel drive (and automatic transmissions).

Bear in mind, of course, that the rand figures quoted below are base prices, and that every single of one of the five models featured here can be fitted with all manner of expensive optional extras, should your pockets stretch even deeper...

5. Mercedes-AMG G63 Edition 1: R3 086 653

The Edition 1 version of the Mercedes-AMG G63 finds itself at number five on the list, with its base price settling just past the R3-million mark. Should you wish to go for the "standard" (for lack of a better term) model, you’ll pay from R2 786 654. Either way, you’ll score a twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 petrol engine churning out 430 kW and 850 N.m, facilitating a 0-100 km/h sprint in a claimed 4,5 seconds.

4. Lamborghini Urus: R3 495 000

Lamborghini’s Urus also uses a twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8, but offering 478 kW and 850 N.m. That’s enough, claims the Italian firm, for a blast to three figures in just 3,6 seconds and a top speed of 305 km/h (making it the second-fastest SUV in the world, behind the 306 km/h Bentayga Speed).

3. Range Rover L SVAutobiography Supercharged: R4 294 111

The poshest version of the Range Rover is the long-wheelbase SVAutobiography, which employs a supercharged 5,0-litre V8 sending 416 kW and 700 N.m to all four corners via an eight-speed automatic transmission (resulting in a blast to 100 km/h from standstill in a claimed 5,3 seconds). It boasts all manner of toys and particularly generous legroom for the occupants enjoying the two rear executive seats.

2. Bentley Bentayga W12 Mulliner: R5 795 000

Is the standard Bentayga – which is offered in V8 diesel (R2 950 000), V8 petrol (also R2 950 000) and W12 petrol (R3 987 000 for the standard model and R4 450 000 for the Speed model) guises – not quite luxurious enough for your tastes? Well, have a look at the extra-fancy Mulliner, which the British firm describes as “the ultimate luxury SUV”. Powered comes from a 6,0-litre W12 engine, producing 447 kW and 900 N.m to facilitate a claimed zero to 100 km/h time of 4,1 seconds and a top speed of 301 km/h.

1. Rolls-Royce Cullinan: POA

We’ve left the Rolls-Royce Cullinan for last despite the fact the company doesn’t actually list a price for its “high-sided vehicle” (a description the British firm prefers to the “SUV” label). There’s no question, though, that it’s very near the top (if not at the very summit) of this list. For the record, the twin-turbo 6,75-litre V12 generates 420 kW and 850 N.m, rocketing the 2660 kg Cullinan from standstill to 100 km/h in a claimed 5,2 seconds.
