Audi’s head of design has confirmed every new SUV launched by the Ingolstadt-based firm over the next few years will spawn a Sportback variant.

In July, the Q3 Sportback was revealed, with Audi handing its compact crossover the in-vogue coupé-style treatment. And it seems the idea will be extended to other new SUV models, after a similar approach was taken with the Q7-based Q8.

“For all the SUVs that will go into the market in the next few years, we will have a derivative that’s something between coupé and SUV,” Marc Lichte told whichcar.com.au.

“For me, it’s the next step – to combine coupé, station wagon and SUV.”

Interestingly, the standard Q3 is almost 30 mm taller than this new SUV-coupé. For the record, the Q3 Sportback measures about 4 500 mm long, 1 840 mm wide and 1 560 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2 680 mm. Despite the sloping roofline, Audi says the rear bench offers “space for three people”.
