Euro NCAP has released its “Best in Class” list for 2019, revealing the top-scoring vehicles for the year across six broad segments.

For the record, the safety authority crash-tested 55 vehicles in 2019, with as many as 41 scoring the full five stars. But which were the best of the best?

Well, Mercedes-Benz regained its crown in the small family car category, with the CLA proving best in class. It scored more than 90 percent in three of the four areas of safety assessed and delivered what Euro NCAP billed as the best overall rating of the year.

The Tesla Model X claimed victory in the large off-road category, while the Tesla Model 3 was top of the electric and hybrid vehicle class. In addition, the latter shared top spot in the large family vehicle category with the BMW 3 Series. Interestingly, the two cars ended up with identical overall scores (the BMW scored higher for pedestrian protection, while the Tesla edged the 3 Series in the safety assistance category).

In the combined small off-road/small MPV class, the Subaru Forester came out on top, just ahead of Mazda’s CX-30 and Volkswagen’s T-Cross. And the supermini class? Well, here the Audi A1 Sportback and Renault Clio tied at the very top of the table...
