BMW has taken to Twitter to poke fun at the new Tesla Cybertruck over its failed armoured glass test.

During the recent reveal of the Cybertruck in Los Angeles, the US-based company sought to demonstrate the strength of the new electric bakkie’s armoured glass. But when lead designer Franz von Holzhausen threw a steel ball at the glass, it (unexpectedly) smashed.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk later took to Twitter to explain the reason for the glass splintering, saying an earlier sledgehammer test had cracked the base of the glass.

But that didn’t stop BMW from spotting a gap and taking it, tweeting that its armoured X5 Protection VR6 “comes with bulletproof windows and offers splinter protection in case it gets hit by a metal ball”.

As a reminder, Tesla’s unconventionally styled six-seater electric bakkie boasts a claimed payload capacity of nearly 1 600 kg, with the most powerful (triple-motor) model’s towing rating coming in at about 6 350 kg. The range-topping variant will sprint to 100 km/h in about 2,9 seconds, says Musk.

BMW’s X5 Protection VR6, meanwhile, is seemingly based on the X5 M50i variant, employing a turbocharged 4,4-litre V8, which offers 390 kW and 750 N.m. The sprint from standstill to 100 km/h takes a claimed 5,9 seconds, or some 1,6 seconds slower than standard thanks to the extra weight added by the armouring.
