Euro NCAP has released the results of its final round of crash testing for 2019, with the Volkswagen Golf 8 and Audi Q8 both scoring five stars for safety.

The safety authority also evaluated the new Nissan Juke (five stars) and updated Volkswagen Up (three stars), along with six other vehicles not expected to launch in South Africa (the Ford Puma, MG ZS EV, MG HS, Aiways U5, Seat Mii and Škoda Citigo).

The eighth-generation Golf achieved the five full stars thanks to what Euro NCAP described as “excellent crashworthiness and standard fit of number of assist systems” (the latter in Europe, that is). It scored 95 percent for adult occupant safety, 89 percent for child occupant safety, 76 percent for vulnerable road-user safety and 78 percent for its safety assistance technology.

However, the Golf did suffer a door opening in a side-impact crash test, with the Wolfsburg-based firm saying the new model has been “type-approved with a standard automatic door-locking function” and that this would prevent such door-opening in real-world crashes.

“Door openings during crash are penalised in Euro NCAP since the start as they represent a critical ejection risk to occupants. Door openings are rare nowadays and it is important that VW is committed to finding the root cause,” said Euro NCAP secretary general Michiel van Ratingen.

And the Audi Q8? Well, Ingolstadt’s flagship SUV scored 93 percent for adult occupant safety, 87 percent for child occupant safety, 71 percent for vulnerable road-user safety and 73 percent for its safety assistance technology.
