Toyota South Africa Motors says it registered some 130 072 vehicles across the country in 2019, earning it a market share of 24,2 percent.

This, the Japanese firm’s local arm says, completes 40 years of “consecutive local market leadership”.

Toyota’s total for the year includes some 63 700 passenger vehicles and 62 724 light commercial vehicles, along with a few thousand units courtesy of its Hino trucks division. Predictably, the Hilux was again the top-seller, with as many as 40 934 units registered in 2019.

“We owe our 40 years of sales success to our loyal customers, our hard-working dealers as well as our ability to read the changing market needs,” said Leon Theron, Toyota SA’s incoming senior vice-president of sales and marketing.

“We are grateful to the entire [Toyota SA] team and dealers across the country for their continued efforts towards making Toyota a market leader, but we cannot be complacent because there is always room for improvement,” added Theron.
