Volkswagen Group brand Lamborghini has announced the temporary closure of its factory in Italy over the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

The Sant’Agata Bolognese-based firm said it had “intensified measures” taken against the coronavirus in support of new government directives. The automaker’s premises would be closed from 13 to 25 March 2020.

“This measure is an act of social responsibility and high sensibility towards our people, in the extraordinary situation in which we find ourselves right now in Italy and which is also evolving abroad due to the worldwide spread of coronavirus,” said Stefano Domenicali, chairman and chief executive officer of Lamborghini.

“As we have done up until now, we continue to monitor the situation in order to react rapidly and with the right flexibility, in collaboration with our people and in order to restart with energy in the right moment,” he added.

At the start of 2020, Lamborghini said its global sales surged some 43 percent to a record 8 205 units in 2019, up from the 5 750 units achieved in 2018. Predictably, the Urus was the volume driver, with 4 962 examples of the SUV sold during the year.
