Mercedes-Benz has confirmed its next-generation Citan van will again be developed “in co-operation” with the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance.

Interestingly, the Stuttgart-based firm furthermore says the new Citan range will include an electric version.

"The new Citan will undergo a comprehensive new development and clearly be recognisable as a Mercedes-Benz at first glance,” said Marcus Breitschwerdt, head of Mercedes-Benz Vans.

“We will provide for a distinctive brand-adequate identity in the successor of our small van", he added.

The Citan has been around 2012 and was created alongside the Renault Kangoo as part of Daimler’s partnership with the Alliance.

Of course, the X-Class bakkie was also conceived in partnership with the Alliance, but reports suggest the Navara-based bakkie will soon be discontinued thanks to disappointing sales.
