Nissan’s chief operating officer says Renault will develop and produce the next-generation Micra hatchback.

As reported by Reuters, Ashwani Gupta told French daily newspaper Le Monde the move was part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance’s cost-saving “leader-follower” scheme.

In May 2020, the Alliance confirmed this approach would see models across the three brands share not only platforms but “upper bodies”, too.

“For the next generation of Micra, we will follow Renault, and we will ask Renault to develop and make the future Micra for us,” Gupta said, according to the newspaper.

The current, fifth-generation Micra was unveiled in 2016 and shares its platform (and entry-level engine) with the outgoing Clio. The new Clio, however, has moved to the Alliance's CMF-B underpinnings.
