The new vehicle sales figures for December 2019 are in ... and 1 356 units separate the top two vehicles on our list of South Africa’s best-selling bakkies.

According to Naamsa, December’s new vehicle industry sales came in at 41 698 units, representing an increase of 4,2 percent compared with the corresponding month in 2018. The light commercial segment, however, showed a decline of 6,7 percent compared with December 2018. So, what exactly happened in terms of bakkie sales in the last month of 2019?

Well, the Toyota Hilux remained at the top of the table ahead of the Ford Ranger, which again had to settle for second place.

The Isuzu D-Max held steady in third (its final figure comprised 1 344 units of the D-Max and one unit of the KB). The Nissan NP300/Hardbody, meanwhile, claimed the fourth spot after moving 839 units.

The Nissan NP200m dropped to fifth after registering 498 units sold, followed by 278 units of Toyota's rugged Land Cruiser Pick up at 278 units. The Volkswagen Amarok (209 units), Mahindra Pik-up (165 units) and Nissan Navara (117 units) occupied berths six through nine on the December sales rankings, while GWM’s Steed reclaimed its tenth spot with 109 units sold.

That means there was no room for the Mahindra Bolero (19 units), Mitsubishi Triton (28 units), Mazda BT-50 (18 units) or Fiat Fullback (nine units) on the list in December 2019. As a reminder, Mercedes-Benz South Africa doesn’t report individual model sales, so it’s hard to tell exactly how many X-Class units were sold during the month.
