The sales figures for May 2019 are in … and a whopping 1 214 units separate the top two vehicles as the (increasingly one-sided) battle for the title of South Africa’s best-selling bakkie continues.

According to Naamsa, May’s new vehicle industry sales came in at 40 506 units, representing a fall of 5,7 percent, year on year. The light commercial segment (12 197 units), meanwhile, showed a drop of 13,0 percent compared with the corresponding month in 2018 (also, be sure to check out the 10 best-selling passenger vehicles for the month as well as the worst-selling cars).

So, what exactly happened in terms of bakkie sales in the fifth month of 2019?

Well, the Toyota Hilux remained at the very top of the table, with the Ford Ranger again having to make do with second place (after the first five months of 2019, the Japanese bakkie finds itself a full 5 392 units ahead of its Blue Oval rival).

Meanwhile, the Nissan NP200 moved up one place to third, forcing the Isuzu D-Max – having late in 2018 switched from the KB badge – back into fourth (its final figure comprised 1 254 units of the D-Max and 58 units of the KB). The Nissan NP300/Hardbody held steady in fifth.

The Mahindra Pik-Up remained in sixth, with the GWM Steed moving up one place to seventh and the Nissan Navara falling one to eight. The Toyota Land Cruiser Pick-up retained ninth place, with the Volkswagen Amarok again claiming the final place on the list.

That means there was no room for the facelifted Mitsubishi Triton (57), Mahindra Bolero (37), Mazda BT-50 (14) or Fiat Fullback (5) in May 2019. Unfortunately, Mercedes-Benz South Africa doesn’t report individual model sales, so it’s hard to tell exactly how many X-Class units were sold during the month.
