The sales figures for September 2019 are in ... and the big news from our list of South Africa’s best-selling bakkies is that the Ford Ranger has regained its previously held top-two position. The Volkswagen Amarok, meanwhile, has dropped a spot.

According to Naamsa, September 2019's new vehicle industry sales came in at 49 191 units, representing a decline of 0,9 percent compared to September 2018. The light commercial segment (13 473 units), meanwhile, showed a small decline of 1,1 percent compared with the corresponding month in 2018. So, what exactly happened in terms of bakkie sales in the ninth month of 2019?

Well, the Toyota Hilux remained at the very top of the table, with the Ford Ranger besting the Nissan NP200 with 71 units to regain second place. For the record, after the first nine months of the year, the Hilux finds itself a full 11 271 units ahead of its Blue Oval rival. Also read: SA’s 10 best-selling bakkies in the first half of 2019

Meanwhile, the Isuzu D-Max – having late in 2018 switched from the KB badge – held steady in fourth (its final figure comprised 1 197 units of the D-Max and seven units of the KB). The Nissan NP300/Hardbody remained in the fifth spot, although sales went down by 195 units.

The Mahindra Pik-Up stayed steady in sixth, with the Toyota Land Cruiser Pick-up again in seventh. Other big news is that GWM Steed sales surpassed that of the Volkswagen Amarok. A seven-unit margin now separates the Steed (eighth) and Amarok (ninth). The Nissan Navara again grabbed the final spot on the list, with 80 units sold.

That means there was no room for the Mahindra Bolero (32), Mitsubishi Triton (25), Mazda BT-50 (23) or Fiat Fullback (eight) in September 2019. As a reminder, Mercedes-Benz South Africa doesn’t report individual model sales, so it’s hard to tell exactly how many X-Class units were sold during the month.
