Toyota South Africa Motors says its Hilux recorded its highest monthly sales total yet in June 2019, with 4 770 examples of the bakkie sold across the country.

This figure is some 35 units up on the bakkie’s previous best, which was recorded in 2011.

Interestingly, Toyota has confirmed 1 885 units were double-cab variants, 1 648 were Xtra-cab models and 1 237 were single-cab derivatives.

“There are not many locally manufactured vehicles that can claim the iconic status that Hilux has achieved in South Africa. Not only has the Hilux sold more than 1 million units to date [locally], it continues to be a sales sensation even in the trying economic climate we are experiencing,” said Calvyn Hamman, senior vice-president of sales and marketing at Toyota South Africa Motors.

The Hilux was again the best-selling bakkie in South Africa in June 2019, eclipsing the Ford Ranger by a whopping 2 741 units. After the first half of the year, the Hilux finds itself some 8 133 units ahead of its Blue Oval rival.

And new GR-Sport and Legend 50 derivatives are set to join the local Hilux range soon...
