Toyota South Africa Motors has provided a breakdown of new vehicle sales for September 2020. Acknowledging that the local automotive market is still struggling in the wake of the Coronavirus-induced economic slump, Toyota SA confirms that some of its models are matching pre-COVID-19 sales figures.

In total, the Japanese brand was able to sell 9 435 units, of which 4 252 comprised Hilux sales; some 842 units up on last year's September total. Despite this impressive result, overall sales for the brand are 2 456 units down from last year.

Toyota’s Hiace taxi, which accounts for 97 percent of the market share in its segment, sold a total of 1 018 units while the proletarian Land Cruiser79 saw a steady figure of 261 sales. As a result Toyota SA has continued its strong run in the Light Commercial Vehicles segment, confirming 5 653 units sold in September compared to a total of 5 360 vehicles recorded in the same month last year.

As for passenger vehicles sales, the total number sold for last month totalled 3 429 units with the brand’s SUV segment-leading Fortuner topping the segment at 911 units. Before its discontinuation, the Etios achieved a figure of 809 units while the Corolla badged models amassed 539 sales.

The new to the market Toyota Starlet racked up a 178-unit tally, while established models such as the Land Cruiser Prado and GR Supra sold 85 and 24 units respectively.
