Volvo Cars has released its sales figures for the first seven months of 2020, with the XC60 proving the most popular model.

According to the Swedish automaker, some 96 622 examples of the XC60 have been sold worldwide from the start of January to the end of July (that’s down on the 111 943 achieved over the same period in 2019), despite the impact of COVID-19.

The XC40 is next in line with 87 085 registrations (up from 74 062 units in 2019), with the XC90 completing the podium on 46 669 units (down from 2019’s figure of 55 443).

Overall, in the first seven months of the year, Volvo Cars sold 332 253 vehicles, down 16 percent compared with the same period in 2019. July, however, saw volumes grow 14,2 percent year-on-year. During the month, SUVs accounted for 72,8 percent of the firm’s total sales.

Yvette Greyvenstein, head of commercial operations at Volvo Car South Africa, said (without disclosing actual sales figures) the firm’s local retail sales were “outstanding” in July, with the company doubling its volumes compared with June 2020.

“We also doubled sales of the XC60, which was our top-selling model in July. XC90 sales were exceptional last month [July]; they grew by 550 percent. During the month of July, SUVs accounted for 93.6 percent of sales,” she added.
