Honda has reportedly discontinued the Civic sedan in its domestic market of Japan, although the model continues in various other countries.

According to Automotive News, the brand’s domestic arm has decided to pull the plug on the Civic sedan. The reason? Sluggish sales, with just 1 619 units sold across Japan in the last financial year.

Interestingly, Japanese publication Best Car reports that the Grace (or Ballade, as we know it here in South Africa) has also been scrapped in that country. It, too, has struggled to retain buyers’ attention.

Of course, the Civic nameplate is by no means dead in Japan, with the Civic hatchback (including the Type R hot hatch) remaining on the market there.

Here in South Africa, the Civic sedan range soldiers on, comprising four variants, with pricing stretching from R394 200 to R548 900. The five-strong Ballade line-up remains, too, with a fresh generation on the way. The Civic Type R hatch, meanwhile, is currently priced at R741 900.
