Mazda’s head of global design says he’s determined to see the RX-Vision concept car reach production.

Speaking to Autocar, the Japanese firm’s design chief, Ikuo Maeda, said he was keen to “realise” the show car as a full production model.

“I have a 43:1 scale model of the RX-Vision sitting on my desk. It is my life’s work to realise this model to a production car,” Maeda-san told the publication.

Revealed as long ago as October 2015 at the Tokyo Motor Show, the RX-Vision has long been thought to be a preview of a new RX-9, which would come as a successor to the rotary-powered RX-7 and RX-8.

The front-engined (Skyactiv-R-powered), rear-wheel-drive concept measures 4 389 mm long, 1 925 mm wide and 1 160 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2 700 mm.

If the RX-Vision eventually does make it to production, there’s one burning question that will finally be answered: is there life in the rotary engine yet?
